Indaw Mahar Guesthouse, the official accommodation at the lake, opened in 1999 - the same year Indawgyi was first designated a protected area. Equipped with a long walkway entrance and the ultimate scenic porch overlooking the lake, there’s no better place to kick back and soak up all that Indawgyi has to offer.

How it Started

The guesthouse was built in Lon Ton in 1999 by the Mohynin Township General Administration (where Indawgyi is located). It was originally built to house government employees when they made trips to the lake for various administrative purposes.

The lumber of the structure is recycled and was donated from the villages around the lake and all revenue derived from it goes back to the district government to fund services throughout the township.

It was not actually until a few years ago that foreigners were allowed to stay in the guesthouse and until now it has been the only place for all travelers both domestic and international to stay and in 2015, the guesthouse received electricity (concurrent with the rest of Indawgyi Lake).

The Right Management

Since the beginning, U Tin Maing has been the manager of the guesthouse. No matter who comes by, he is always ready to welcome them with tea, coffee and by pointing out the famous landmarks like Shwe Mitzyu Pagoda.

He has lived in Lon Ton for over twenty years and is an expert on all things Indawgyi. Whether you are looking to find some traditional food or book a boat trip to a different village he is the person to talk to!

A Place to Enjoy

The long walkway entrance is just one part of the charm here.

In the past, there was an additional guesthouse. It is currently under renovation and expected to open within a month or so. It will feature slightly nicer accommodations and will be an excellent way of hosting the additional tourists coming to Indawgyi.

For the time being, although some travelers might find Indaw Mahar to be lacking a few of the essentials such as a/c, it is a great place to escape the world and take in the serenity of Indawgyi. It is a simple place that reflects where it is from.
